World Economic Forum in Davos 2018

The 48th annual World Economic Forum (WEF), which was held from January 23 to 26, 2018, completed its work in Davos, Switzerland. The slogan of the event was "Creating a common future in a fragmented world." It was attended by more than 70 heads of state and government. Most of the world's leading countries represented at the forum spoke out against protectionism in world trade, which is now gaining momentum. One of the main events within the forum was the speech of US President Donald Trump, who announced his intention to build mutually beneficial trade cooperation with the whole world.

World Economic Forum in Davos 2018

The World Economic Forum in Davos in 2018 brought together many royal people: King Philip and Queen Mathilde of Belgium, Crown Priest Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit (Norway), King Abdullah and Queen Rania (Jordan) and their son Crown Prince Hussein, Queen of the Netherlands Maxim, King of Spain Philippe , Prince of Monaco Albert, Crown Prince of Liechtenstein Alois, Princess Maybel of Oran-Nassau.

In total, more than 400 sessions on different topics were held at the VEF-2018. In addition to political and economic sessions, discussions were held on healthy nutrition and diets, hypnosis, etc. Among others, there were sessions on "How to stop sexual harassment" and "We need to talk about LGBT identification."

The opening ceremony was attended by musician Elton John, actress Cate Blanchett and Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan. They received Crystal Awards for their social activities and charitable work.

Every morning before the start of business events, from 08:00 to 08:30, meditation classes were held. The forum staff came to work from Geneva on trains that work on renewable energy sources.

Help econominews.ru: WEF was established in 1971. For today, about 1000 large companies and organizations from different countries of the world, including Russia, are members of the WEF. The permanent executive body is the Board of Directors. The headquarters is located in Cologne, a suburb of Geneva. The budget is formed at the expense of annual membership fees and funds contributed by participants in the Forum. The list of participants is revised annually.

The founder and permanent leader of the WEF is Professor Klaus Schwab from Switzerland. On his initiative in 1971, the first symposium was held, which brought together about 450 leaders of leading European companies to discuss the prospects for the world economy and develop a common strategy. At the first meetings, which were held under the auspices of the Commission of the European Communities (now the European Commission), issues of improving the position of Western Europe in competition were discussed. Over the years, the themes gradually expanded, political and economic issues affecting other regions, problems of improving the mechanism of world trade, and correct partnership were included in the agenda. In the mid-1970s, influential people from all over the world (members of governments and business leaders) began to visit Davos, and in the next decade the forum acquired the status of one of the main events of the year.

Appearance of the US president on the stage of VEF-2018 was preceded by the performance of the national orchestra. Then the 79-year-old founder and executive chairman of the WEF, the Swiss, Klaus Schwab, invited Trump to speak with the words: "I realize that some of your strong leadership is misinterpreted, so it is very important for us here to hear yourself ".

Trump in Davos called to invest in the US and outlined foreign policy priorities

The speech of the US President lasted about 20 minutes. Donald Trump began the report by listing the successes that the American economy has achieved since its election as president. He recalled that more than 2.4 million jobs were created in the United States this year, and unemployment is at its lowest level since the beginning of the century. The income tax has decreased from 35% to 21%, Trump added.

"As the president of the United States, I will always put America first, as leaders of other countries should put their countries' interests first," he said. At the same time, Trump stressed that the policy of "America in the first place" does not mean that the United States will work alone. At the same time, the head of the White House said that Washington is ready to conclude bilateral trade agreements with any other states for the sake of creating a trade system that would work not only for the US, but for the whole world.

The Davos Forum, which previously formed the direction of global political and economic thought, now increasingly follows the world trends. The open part of the forum, where the representatives of the political and business elite once again promised to fight against inequality and global warming, to stifle bureaucrats and populists and to perform other charitable deeds is one of the brightest explanations of the "collapse of expert opinion", the crisis of confidence in highbrow experts and the elite as a construct.

It is this crisis, as many analysts believe, that led to the growth of populist and isolationist sentiments, which are now being called upon to fight in Davos.

Angela Merkel

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that national protectionism "can not be an answer to world crises." She called on the European Union to ensure the unity of foreign policy amid disagreements with major international players such as India, the United States, China and Russia.

In addition, the Chancellor called for the pursuit of cooperation with neighbors, rather than self-isolation. The politician also added that Europe is responsible "for what happens to Iraq, Libya."

In addition, Merkel mentioned the withdrawal of the UK from the EU. Europe is open to any kind of cooperation with London after the "breccia".

Emmanuel Macron

Macron spoke at the forum about the need to revise Europe's strategy for 10 years, as the globalization process is in crisis. According to him, the changes should touch on the economy, social issues, science and politics.

The president spoke about the five pillars of reforms in France, which, in his opinion, will restore France's leadership in the EU. According to him, this: the education of people; increased investment and capital; increased pace and flexibility in business; combating climate change; change the internal culture of France.

Also, Macron joked about the snowfalls that hit Davos - that this could cause individuals to change their minds about global warming. "Fortunately, this year you did not invite anyone to the forum who was skeptical of global warming."

Theresa May

The Prime Minister of Great Britain in her speech paid great attention to the role of innovative technologies in the modern world. In particular, she remembered the case when the drone saved two boys in the sea, dropping them an inflatable mattress. And also noted that thanks to technology, you can reduce the number of breast cancer by one third.

In this case, Teresa May listed not only the benefits of technological progress, but also its threats. Responsibility for combating potential challenges, in her opinion, should be shared with technology companies and investors.

According to May, the UK is already developing a digital charter, based on a set of principles. The issue of Brexit May was mentioned in passing.

Justin Trudeau

The Canadian prime minister, a lover of extravagant socks, said during his speech at the forum that 11 countries participating in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TTP) agreed to continue work on developing a modified version of the agreement.

This agreement provided for the creation of the largest free trade zone in the world with a population of about 800 million people. It was signed in October 2015 by 12 states, including the United States. In the new agreement, the US will not take part. The 11 countries that participate in the new agreement are Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam.

In addition, the Prime Minister of Canada said that rapid technological development threatens to widen the gap between rich and poor and social inequality, and also leaves thousands unemployed.

Donald Trump

Arriving accompanied by seven helicopters, the US President at the beginning of his speech drew attention to the successes that the US economy achieved in 2017 "after many years of stagnation." According to him, unemployment among African Americans and Hispanics in the US dropped to a record low, 2.4 million new jobs were created since the election of Trump in the country, and the index of optimism in small business reached a record high in the history.

The president added that the tax cut led to an increase in the average income of American households by $ 4 thousand. The President also noted that the US is not against signing separate free trade agreements with the countries of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TTP), despite the US withdrawal from the TTP in 2017 .

He also raised the issue of financing international security, mentioning successes in the fight against radical terrorists in Syria and Iraq, as well as the efforts of the international community aimed at nuclear disarmament of the DPRK.

"Our immigration system is stuck in the past," Trump said, adding that he wants to replace the current US immigration system with a system based on the merits of a potential immigrant.

The head of the American state concluded his speech with a proposal addressed to all the leaders of the countries and business titans who were present in Davos.

"We are stronger when free sovereign nations work together for common goals and a common dream," concluded Trump.

Russia at the WEF-2018

The Russian delegation was headed by Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich. The head of the Ministry of Economic Development Maxim Oreshkin, the ministers of energy and communications, the head of the RFPI (Russian Direct Investment Fund) Kirill Dmitriev, the heads of VEB, VTB, Sberbank, Alrosa, Rusal, Severstal, TMK, NLMK, Yandex, Kaspersky Lab, and other businessmen also entered it. In the session Russia: the strategic view was attended by Alexey Kudrin, now head of the Center for Strategic Research. An extensive agenda was presented on the site of the "Russian House", organized by "Roskongress", including the theme "Not only football. How to realize the opportunities of the World Cup in football ».

At breakfast, VTB Dvorkovich said that Russia's economy has long been adapted to sanctions, and they do not interfere with moving forward.

True, not all members of the Russian delegation agreed with such an assessment of sanctions, especially in light of the fact that, according to the decision of the US president, the sanctions list will be expanded. The final decision on this issue will be made in late January-early February, after its discussion in the US Congress.

Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation Alexander Novak in his speech at the session of the forum admitted that Western sanctions "are a little straining", but noted that they gave impetus to the development of Russian industry. Of course, they strain a little, sanctions. When a business all the time has to look around, think, will sanctions be imposed or how some people will be aware of this, of course, this is annoying. And from the point of view of the investment, moral attitude, there are certain disadvantages in this. Sanctions do not provide an opportunity to solve global economic problems, this must be understood, the minister continued. As for Russia, to be honest, thanks to sanctions, we received an additional impetus for the development of our industry and to redirect investment flows to the loading of our enterprises.

VTB Chairman Andrei Kostin warned of the growing threat of a military conflict in Europe and compared the possible US introduction of new economic sanctions against Russia with the declaration of war. "We are on the verge of a new arms race. NATO requires more weapons and places more weapons in Europe. Russia will respond in kind. Who will benefit from this? Only generals and weapons manufacturers. America believes that Europe should pay more for it. Who needs it? This is very dangerous, - said Costin in an interview with the newspaper at the margins of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Breakfast Sberbank was dedicated to futuristic topics of technology and artificial intelligence. The most memorable participant of the breakfast was the robot Sofia, who joked with Gref about stereotypes in the society about robots and even agreed to go skiing with him. But to keep the promise it was prevented by the Ukrainian delegation, which later withdrew the robot with the question "What to do with corruption in Ukraine".

As Oreshkin said, Russia will become a partner of the WEF in the center of the fourth industrial revolution in the direction of artificial intelligence and machine learning. We believe that this direction is very promising for the next 5-10 years, I met with the chairman of Google's Board of Directors Eric Schmidt, he said that this technology can increase the productivity of labor by 10-15% at companies in which it is introduced, and that those countries that are actively investing in these technologies, in 10-15 years will be a step higher than all the others, - said the head of the Ministry of Economic Development.

Organized by the "Roskognress" Foundation, the official Russian residence "Russian House" during its work at the forum in Davos was attended by more than 1 thousand guests from 60 countries, Roskonsressa said.

More than 50 business events and panel sessions were held in the walls of the "Russian House". Key topics of discussion were, in particular, the development of digital technologies and industry, the issues of Russia's competitiveness in the global energy market.

"The Russian House" has become an effective place to work, hold meetings and promote Russia's interests in the world, "the words of the head of the Russian delegation, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich, are quoted in the message.

Recall that in 2017, the WEF in Davos was held on January 17-20. The main directions of the forum were: rethinking global cooperation, revitalizing the global economy, reforming capitalism and preparing for the fourth industrial revolution. It was attended by more than a thousand heads of companies, delegations from more than 70 countries, leading international organizations such as the UN, WTO, IMF. The Russian delegation was led by First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov.
